Calcium Carbonate: The One That Needs Help

That chemical reaction converts the insoluble carbonate compound into a soluble, absorbable form of calcium. Without enough stomach acid, that conversion doesn't happen properly, and much of the calcium simply isn't available for your body to use.

- It can be taken with or without food.

- It has a lower proportion of elemental calcium by weight, around 21%, so a slightly larger dose is usually needed to deliver the same amount of usable calcium.
That lower elemental percentage is part of why calcium citrate costs more to manufacture — and part of why it shows up less often on cheap supplement shelves, even though for a huge number of people it's the form that will actually do something.
